Welcome to Honolulu City Football Club

In May, 2008, the Honolulu City Football Club (HCFC) was founded by Keach Mizuno, a holder of The Football Association (England) Coaching License, along with parents who shared his vision for a high quality youth soccer training program.

HCFC is an independent soccer club and active in the heart of the city of Honolulu.  HCFC is committed to deliver a high quality training program for local youth players on a long-term basis.

HCFC participates in the HYSA's Oahu League, and the games are held on the weekends at the Waipio Soccer Park.  With extensive contacts at the club level and to the Football Association in England and Japan, HCFC plans to travel to those locations to get international experiences for its players.  Travel will be planned when the age of the players is appropriate.

Mission Statement

“Helping our children pursue their dreams”

The mission of the Honolulu City Football Club ("HCFC") is to satisfy the demands of the local soccer community for higher quality youth soccer training.  HCFC strives to accomplish its goal by providing training based upon not only the extensive skills and knowledge of HCFC's coaches, but also HCFC's access to the most advanced information available through HCFC's contacts with the Football Association, England.  HCFC's training program consists of the development of each player's technical skills, tactical knowledge, and physical development.  HCFC strives to provide the training that is necessary for players to compete at the highest levels of world soccer.

HCFC is dedicated to those young players who possess the desire and attitude to learn, are willing to make a commitment to attain their optimal potential, and who have a strong aspiration to play at the highest level.  HCFC is committed to execute the most effective training program that meets and satisfies the utmost interests and expectations of its players and their parents, which may include obtaining a college scholarship or receiving an offer from a top football club.

HCFC is an affiliated organization of Pro Soccer, England, led by Managing Director, Austin Speight, UEFA “A” License.  Pro Soccer is based in Manchester, England and provides clinics and training sessions at various levels in UK, Australia, UAE and USA with UEFA “A” licensed coaches who are with top football clubs in England.  Go to www.prosoccer.org.uk for more details.

Vision and Objectives

HCFC strives to nurture each player’s talent and assist to develop each player to his/her optimal potential by providing a long-term high quality youth training program.  Because of the high quality youth training program provided, it is in HCFC’s best interest to help develop those who are determined to pursue their career to the highest level through their commitment and hard work.

However, as the primary objective of HCFC is to develop youth players on a long-term basis, HCFC will not seek to build “strong teams” by recruiting players to replace a player that is currently on a HCFC team.  More specifically, HCFC will not replace its current players with any other players unless some issues arise that become a distraction or concern to the team and/or HCFC.

HCFC’s philosophy is consistent with that of the top clubs in Europe.  Specifically, the primary objective of those top clubs in Europe is to develop young players on a long-term basis through the growing process of their childhood in order for them to be the most competitive and successful in their late teens.  The target goal of many of those clubs is the U-17 level, which is the youngest age level at which the FIFA World Cup is played.  As is the case with the top European clubs, HCFC is NOT focused on winning the games with its younger age level teams, but is instead focused on the development of its players.  Games that are played at the younger age levels are effective to help the player learn all the technical aspects of offense and defense as an individual and as a team as well.  Therefore, specific verbal instructions and advice are given by the coaches to the players on the field during the practice and the game right at the time when the corrections need to be made in order to help the players who remember what has occurred, which will give the best opportunity for them to correct and learn.

HCFC may not be able to effectively assess the potential of its players through the training provided if too much focus is placed on winning the games at younger age levels.  Specifically, at those younger age levels such as U12 and below, it is easier to win the game with a group of early matured children and/or those who may have a more active and aggressive personality than others who have the right attitude to learn and work very hard.

The quality of the training should be evaluated by the progress and improvement that the players have made.  The game should only be evaluated by how the players have played according to the coach’s instructions and the goals/objectives for that specific game.

At the appropriate time, however, HCFC will make its best efforts to expose its players to competitive tournaments with the goal of showcasing the potential of HCFC’s players to play at the college level and above.  To that end, when it is appropriate, HCFC will seek to promote its players through participation in local, out-of-state and international tournaments.

Program Overview

HCFC is here for youth players who love the game of soccer and seeks to help its players reach their maximum potential.

HCFC provides training and development based upon study and techniques developed in countries where soccer is the primary sport.  In many of those countries, there is more than 100 years of history in soccer.  In addition, in those countries, soccer is a multibillion-dollar business, and as a result, the clubs have very strong financial resources to support and develop the sport.  These clubs invest in studying and researching all aspects of the game and training in order to develop elite players and improve the quality of the game.

However, in parts of the world where soccer has not (yet) been established as the primary sport, there may not be the same emphasis on training and development.  Specifically, these countries may not have the resources to examine the fine areas of training required for their youth programs to develop into successful programs at the higher levels.

Many parents of the youth players and others in the community may also have limited knowledge and ideas about the game of soccer, as well as the training required at different age levels.  Therefore, it may be difficult for some parents to evaluate and recognize whether their children are receiving high quality training as parents may mistakenly judge the quality of training by the outcome of their children’s games.  As stated above, the outcome of the games is secondary to the development of HCFC’s players.

The soccer training programs at the youth level are very different from those at the senior level due to the physical growth, intelligence, and maturity levels of the youth players.  Because of the nature of the game, as well as what is required to be a top player at the senior level, the youth players need step-by-step training as they move up through each age level, taking into consideration the progress of the players’ physical growth and intelligence.  Therefore, the contents of HCFC’s training program will be specifically designed according to the respective age levels of its players.

In order to nurture and develop the talent of a youth player to their optimal potential, HCFC has retained a Director of Coaching that is a UEFA (Union of European Football Association) licensed coach.  HCFC will also seek to hire coaches who have a higher playing experience and coaching qualifications. In addition, HCFC will only hire coaches that share the vision for the youth training program as established by HCFC.  HCFC’s coaches must also have firm technical skills and tactical knowledge of today’s game of soccer.
